LANSING — Today, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer issued Executive Order 2019-9 creating the Educator Advisory Council within the Michigan Department of Education. The 15-member council will be comprised of individuals representing various roles in Michigan’s public education system and be responsible for identifying issues impacting the effectiveness of our public schools, as well as making legislative recommendations. Following the announcement, state Rep. Matt Koleszar (D-Plymouth), a former high school teacher, issued the following statement:
“The success of Michigan’s public schools hinges on our ability to understand the unique needs of classrooms across the state. No one understands those needs better than the educators working on the front lines to prepare our students for success, and that’s why it’s critical we receive their input and feedback as we develop legislation to address the educational crisis our state is facing. With the creation of this council, Gov. Whitmer has taken a concrete step to provide our public schools with the resources and support they deserve and I’m ready to partner with her in the legislature to make that happen.”
