LANSING — Following weeks of bipartisan negotiations, the House passed a sweeping overhaul of Michigan’s auto insurance system today. The final bill includes several provisions put forward by House Democrats including the elimination of non-driving rate-setting factors, guaranteed rate reductions and increased consumer protections. In response, state Rep. Brenda Carter (D-Pontiac) issued the following statement:
“Michigan drivers desperately needed auto no-fault reform that will put them first. This plan finally delivers relief to the families of our communities by eliminating the use of discriminatory rate-setting practices so Michigan drivers are no longer penalized for who they are. Insurance rates should be based only on our ability to drive and nothing more and that’s what this plan does.”
