Happy Primary Day! I want to encourage all of my fellow Michiganders to go out and vote today! Michigan democrats have passed groundbreaking legislation to strengthen our elections. It’s important that we all exercise our right to participate in our democracy. You can go to mvic.sos.state.mi.us/Voter/Index to look up your voting place and hours. And if you aren’t registered to vote yet, there’s still time to do it! As we head towards this year’s primary and general election, the Michigan legislature is required by law to enter two month-long communications blackout periods leading up to these elections. The first began July 6 and will continue until August 6, the day of the primary election. The next blackout period will begin October 5 through Election Day on November 5. This means my legislative colleagues and I will be stepping back from our official social media accounts, halting newsletters, mailers, and most other communications through August 6 and from the beginning of October to election day on November 5.
While I will not be posting legislative updates or livestreaming our Coffee Hours over these two periods, delivering uninterrupted constituent services is essential to my team and I. The blackout periods will not affect my team’s ability to respond to constituent inquiries in a timely manner, and I invite you to email my office at FeliciaBrabec@house.mi.gov if you have any questions or concerns.
Nonetheless, these blackout periods remind us that it is almost time to vote! The primary election in Michigan takes place on August 6, and the general election on November 5. Visit www.Michigan.gov/VOTE to discover your polling location, find ballot drop boxes in your area, or register to vote online. If using an absentee ballot, remember they must be received by your city or township clerk by 8 p.m. on Election Day. If returning absentee ballots by mail, it is recommended to do so at least two weeks before election day to ensure that your vote is received in time to be counted.

Today serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for accessible infrastructure, healthcare equity, and inclusive policies that we should be aiming for. Take time to read the inspiring stories of figures like Audre Lorde, Judith Heumann, Brad Lomax, or even FDR. Let's make today a good one, and celebrate how far we’ve come.

This July is Disability Pride Month, marking the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which was signed into law on July 26th, 1990. This month is a reminder to take time to engage with the diverse stories of people across the nation who have a disability. From students, to advocates, to veterans, to family; it's important to recognize the difficulties facing Americans with disabilities. While this month is an opportunity to celebrate and share pride, let's not forget the work that needs to be done to achieve equity for 1 in 4 Americans. Access to reliable and affordable mobility aids and healthcare, practicing Covid safety, and recognizing the various struggles that come with intersectional identities are all things disability advocates have been calling attention to. This month, we Michiganders can do our part by listening to and elevating the voices of our disabled community.

Pittsfield leadership, including Supervisor Mandy Grewal & Park Commission Chair Trish Reilly, has diligently worked to develop a sustainable plan for Oak Valley Park. It's exciting when that planning comes to fruition to provide accessible recreational space within our township.
