I will do everything I can to help get water affordability legislation passed this year.
"First-term state Rep. Tonya Myers Phillips, who represents Hamtramck, Highland Park and parts of Detroit, says water affordability is a moral issue. Water shutoffs disproportionately effect low-income families, seniors and communities of color, Myers Phillips said. These are the same communities that already bear the brunt of environmental injustices.”
It is an honor to collaborate with community members and lawmakers to secure humane solutions all Michiganders need and deserve.

The proposed bills would cap water rates for low-income residents in the state and protect them from shutoffs.

I am so happy to share that the Michigan House of Representatives adopted my resolution HR 59, declaring this week, April 11-17, 2025, as Black Maternal Health Week in the State of Michigan! I am so incredibly honored to raise awareness of the disparities faced by black women in this state and nation regarding our maternal health.
I was deeply honored to share this moment with Black mamas and co-sponsors serving in the Michigan House of Representatives, and beautiful black mamas and supporters. We officially welcomed Mothering Justice to the Michigan House of Representatives😊.
The fight continues, but this was a truly special day, now etched in Michigan's history.

Sadly, Michigan has one of the highest death rates among Black pregnant women in the nation — this is an unacceptable and completely preventable injustice. As a mom and founding board member of the nonprofit Mothering Justice, I am dedicated to advocating for and demanding action to ensure Black mothers' and babies' health and well-being. I call on the State of Michigan and all who value life and motherhood to do better. ... See MoreSee Less

‘Slap in the face’: Black legislators condemn University of Michigan’s DEI cuts
bit.ly
Last week, University of Michigan announced the closure of its Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Office for Health Equity and Inclusion and the end of its DEI 2.0 Strategic Plan.
Today, March 25th, is Equal Pay Day, which unites us in our shared commitment to address the gender pay gap, especially the significant disparity women of color face. I am proud to collaborate and join with fellow members of the Progressive Women's Caucus, collectively reintroducing a 10-bill pay equity package. If passed, these bills would require:
- Pay transparency: You must post a salary when you post a job.
- Requiring employers to post about equal pay rights in the workplace.
- Allowing for anonymous reporting of wage discrimination.
-More notice of deductions for garnishments.
- Requires an employer to disclose wage information of similarly situated employees
within 30 days to requesting employees, the employer may redact the names of similarly situated employees but shall provide information about their sex and seniority.
- and more!
Everybody deserves equitable pay!

JUST NOW: By holding these bills hostage, Michigan Republicans are unconstitutionally hurting working families & cultural treasures like Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. ... See MoreSee Less
