ST. JOSEPH, Mich., Jan. 7, 2025 — Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel today issued an opinion determining that House Republicans’ maneuver to claw back $645 million in previously approved work project funding was unconstitutional. The opinion follows weeks of immediate and relentless actions from legislative Democrats urging the restoration of dollars promised to kids, moms, families, small businesses and more.

In response, state Rep. Joey Andrews (D-St. Joseph) issued the following statement:

“Last month, House Republicans voted to rip away millions in funding for critical programs that support families and community organizations across Michigan. This corrupt, unprecedented move showed that lawlessness and a total disregard for the Constitution are not unique to the GOP in D.C. and unfortunately, they are becoming a familiar Republican tactic at this point.

“Speaker Hall decimated faith that government can be an effective partner in bettering people’s lives in his seemingly giddy zeal to cut funding for senior centers, homeless shelters, workforce training programs and medical care for young mothers. While last month’s move was cruel, the Attorney General’s decision is an important first step toward restoring that faith for Michiganders in the face of Republican overreach.”
