ST. JOSEPH, Mich., Dec. 3, 2025 — State Rep. Joey Andrews (D-St. Joseph) is celebrating a historic federal investment in Holtec International. The $400 million in funding, announced yesterday by the U.S. Department of Energy, will support the deployment of two next-generation SMR-300 reactors at the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant in Covert Township. The new reactors will generate 600 megawatts of safe, reliable clean energy, adding to the 800 megawatts already produced at the site. This will nearly double the plant’s output, providing electricity to more than 1.4 million households and businesses across the state.

After the announcement, Andrews issued the following statement:

“This is a monumental step forward for Southwest Michigan and for our state’s clean energy future. This investment in Holtec builds on the state funding I helped secure to successfully reopen the Palisades plant, and I’m proud to have played a role in advancing this critical project.

“By protecting 900 good-paying jobs and delivering carbon-free electricity to families and businesses, Michigan continues to lead the nation in nuclear technology and innovation. The bipartisan nuclear energy package I sponsored further demonstrates our commitment to advancing the industry, strengthening our workforce and ensuring our communities have access to clean, reliable and affordable energy.”
