LANSING — House Democratic Leader Sam Singh (D-East Lansing) announced the winners of the fifth annual Pure Michigan art competition for students attending high schools in the 69th House District at a ceremony held at Okemos High School today. The winners are Dora Ivkovich and Kelly Wang, who both attend Okemos High School. Their artwork will be on display for all staff and visitors to see in Leader Singh’s office for the next year. Each piece was created to depict what each student believed best represented Pure Michigan.

“It is always remarkable to see the artistic talent of high school students in our community. Each year, visitors to our office often comment on the outstanding ability these students show,” Singh said. “As always, we are very excited to have continued the competition this year to exhibit the work of local students.”

Over the last several years, sharp declines in funding for public schools in Michigan have resulted in many art and music programs being defunded or cut completely. Thankfully, there is strong support from parents and local communities to keep many of these programs afloat.

“Time and time again, we have seen the positive impact on students from arts education. It is vital that we continue to advocate and push measures to keep fine arts programs in our public schools,” Singh said. “These classes teach passion, shape talent and boost student confidence, which can better develop academic performance as a whole.”
