Rep. Banks Appalled by Violent Attack in District
State Representative Brian Banks (D-Harper Woods) responded today to an event that took place in his district Wednesday, April 2. After accidentally hitting a 10-year-old boy with his vehicle, Steve Utash stopped to help the child, and was subsequently beaten and robbed. Utash suffered severe wounds and is currently in critical condition.
“While traveling through my district, Mr. Utash did the right thing by stopping to help a child in need, and, appallingly, was punished for doing so,” Banks said. “I want District 1 to be a safe place for residents to live, work and travel through. In order for this to become a reality, something needs to be done.”
Two teenaged boys have been arrested in conjunction with the beating and robbery, but as of this weekend, no charges had been filed. Investigators believe the boys are only two of about 10 people involved in the incident.
“My heart goes out to Mr. Utash and his family,” Banks said. “I am devastated that this happened in District 1, and I promise to do all I can to see that another incident of this kind does not happen. People should not be punished for doing the right thing.”
