SOUTHFIELD, Mich., May 12, 2020 — In partnership with the transportation network company, Lyft, State Rep. Kyra Bolden (D-Southfield) is pleased to announce an effort to provide access to free rides for south-eastern Michigan residents in need during the COVID-19 pandemic. Ride codes will be shared with Lighthouse, an Oakland County-based nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting homelessness and poverty, to help individuals facing transportation challenges get to temporary shelter sites and emergency food distribution locations.

This partnership is funded by LyftUp, Lyft’s comprehensive effort to expand transportation access to those who need it most. Lighthouse is currently providing basic needs support and life-sustaining services to more than 5,000 people a week.

“Addressing the transportation needs for some of our most vulnerable residents must be at the forefront of our response to this ongoing pandemic,” said Bolden. “And for those trying to access the safety and security of shelter, food and other resources during this time, just getting to and from these locations may serve as yet another barrier. I’m proud to have worked diligently with Lyft to help address this critical need for our community.”

“We want to increase access to transportation for those who need it, particularly to meet their essential needs during this time. By activating LyftUp, we’re able to partner with Rep. Bolden to fill mobility needs and increase access to transportation for Lighthouse’s community,” said Elliot Darvick, Midwest Regional Director for Lyft. “We’re also grateful to all those who drive with Lyft for helping provide rides for those in need. Lyft will be supporting drivers by creating new opportunities to help them earn additional income through the Lyft app and continuously working to protect their safety.”

Through LyftUp, Lyft has partnered with more than 500 organizations nationwide to offer community support during the ongoing crisis.
