LANSING — State Rep. Leslie Love (D-Detroit) announced today she is holding a creative writing contest for students in the 10th House District, which comprises a portion of northwest Detroit and Redford Township. The theme of the contest is “Civil Rights and Civic Engagement.”

“I want young people to know that it’s never too early to get involved and start thinking about your place in the world and what it means to be a citizen,” Love said. “So much is happening in the world that will involve and effect young people, and I think this is a good way for them to become involved and express themselves in this fast-changing world.”

Entries will be accepted until midnight March 3, and the winner will be announced on March 27. The winner will receive a Chromebook computer and the chance to job shadow Love for a day (prize paid for with private funds). The contest is open to all District 10 students in grades 9-12, one entry per student. The entries must be typed and double-spaced, no more than 600 words, and can be an essay, poem, short story, song/rap or play excerpt. Entries can be submitted to LeslieLove@house.mi.gov or by mail to P.O. Box 30014, Lansing, MI 48909-7514.

“I look forward to reviewing these entries and seeing the wealth of creativity that the 10th District’s students have to offer,” Love said.
