LANSING — Gov. Rick Snyder released his budget proposal for Fiscal Year 2018-19 today, which included the announcement that state workers will take over prison food services when the current food services contract with Trinity Services Group ends in July. In response, state Rep. Sara Cambensy (D-Marquette) issued the following statement:

“I am very pleased to hear that we will be going back to state workers providing food services in our state prisons. Since 2013, when the state privatized food services, we have seen nothing but problems. From bug-infested food to high employee turnover and employees breaking the rules to fraternize with inmates, privatization has been a disaster that endangered the lives of corrections officers, prison workers and even inmates. It’s unfortunate that it took this long for the administration to realize this. This is good news for our community as it means that our exceptional state workers will be back on the job in the state prisons in the area.”
