LANSING — President Donald Trump has decided to end DACA protections for “Dreamers” — undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as children — to take effect in six months. In response, House Democratic Leader Sam Singh (D-East Lansing) issued the following statement:

“Today’s decision to rescind the DACA program contradicts the values of our country. The decision is especially cruel to these young people who were brought to our nation as children and who have known no other home. Today, we have a chance to stand up for our shared values and the very ideas that our nation is built on. Congress has a window of opportunity to write the protections of DACA into law and bring permanent protection to American Dreamers. These are young people who have studied hard, worked hard and already made great contributions to our country. People across our nation, from every political background and walk of life, agree that they should be given the opportunity to stay here and become Americans. I urge political leaders in Washington to step forward and do what’s right, and to extend legal protection to Dreamers once and for all.”
