LANSING — Today, the Michigan Legislature passed Senate Bills 748 and 750, a package to protect the state personal income tax exemption. In response, state Rep. Darrin Camilleri (D-Brownstown Township) issued the following statement:

“The bills we voted on today were undeniably necessary. Due to a federal oversight in overhauling our country’s tax system, Michiganders would have been forced to pay more than $1 billion extra in income taxes next year. I am grateful that my colleagues realized what a disaster that would have been for the working families of this state, and I was pleased to vote in favor of allowing our hardworking men and women to keep more of their money. Working families throughout Michigan need real tax relief, and though there is certainly more work to be done, today was a step in the right direction to making our tax system fairer for all Michigan residents.”
