Statement from State Rep. Jon Hoadley on Republican efforts to undercut executive office powers

LANSING — Today, House Republicans rushed through House Bill 6553 to allow the Legislature to intervene in court proceedings, effectively undermining the power of the attorney general's office and ignoring the will of the voters who elected Attorney General-elect Nessel last month. In response to its passage, state Rep. Jon Hoadley (D-Kalamazoo) issued the following statement:

“The attorney general is the people’s lawyer while the state House is the people’s House, two separate but important roles. This bill goes beyond legislative overreach, directly attacking the core of what makes our democracy strong: the separation of powers. This legislation weakens the foundation of our democracy, and everyone — regardless of their political affiliation — should be upset.”
