State Rep. Tim Sneller (D-Burton) attends Gov. Rick Snyder’s eighth State of the State address with special guest Dr. Lisa Hagel, superintendent of the Genesee Intermediate School District, on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2018, at the state Capitol in Lansing.

LANSING — Tonight, the House and Senate convened for a joint legislative session to hear Gov. Rick Snyder give his eighth and final State of the State address. In response, state Rep. Tim Sneller (D-Burton) issued the following statement:

“I was heartened to hear the governor affirm his commitment to investing in our state’s education system, and I hope that this is more than yet another empty promise. After years of underfunding our schools to the tune of nearly $2,000 per student, our kids are struggling to learn in overcrowded classrooms that cannot afford the technology or resources necessary to equip students with the skills they need to thrive in our 21st century economy. Having a great education provides young people the freedom to shape their own futures, but they can only receive that education when we decide to invest in their schools and put professionals in their classrooms, and for too long that has not been the case. I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to make our education system stronger for all of Michigan’s young people.”
