Yanez Reminds Families about the EITC
State Representative Henry Yanez (D-Sterling Heights) today reminded Michigan’s low-income working families that the state Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) can mean extra money back in their tax refund.
“This credit can help working families make repairs on their car or pay off a credit card,” said Yanez. “Although the credit has been reduced, every little bit helps and it should be claimed if you and your family are eligible.”
To qualify for the EITC, a person must have earned income from a job and meet certain income requirements. There is both a federal EITC and a Michigan EITC. The Michigan EITC is equal to 6 percent of your federal credit for tax year 2012.
“The EITC has been proven to be an effective way of rewarding hard work. You have to have an income in order to get this credit, so it is not a handout,” continued Yanez. “Families also pump that money back into the local economy, so small businesses get a boost. Make sure to check your eligibility for this important tax credit.”
Yanez also reminds people that there are many organizations and groups that offer free tax preparation for many taxpayers. Residents of Macomb County can call 2-1-1 for more information. People can also visitwww.michiganfreetaxhelp.org for groups, locations and phone numbers.
