August Recap: Community updates, events, legislative snapshot and more

Welcome to my August Recap Newsletter!

As summer begins to wind down, my team and I remain focused on serving the residents of House District 3 and making sure our community has the support and resources it needs. From connecting with residents across the district to working on legislation in Lansing, we remain committed to listening, responding and delivering results for our community.

During August, our office continued to meet with residents, attend community events and work alongside local organizations and community partners. Staying connected with our district helps us better understand the issues facing our neighbors and ensures our community’s priorities continue to guide our work in Lansing.

As we head into the final weeks of summer, I encourage residents to stay engaged, take advantage of the many events happening throughout our communities, and continue reaching out to my office with questions, concerns, or ideas.

Please join me on Friday, Sept. 18, for our next Community Conversation. These gatherings give residents a chance to speak with me directly, ask questions, discuss issues affecting our community, and hear updates on my work in Lansing. I look forward to continuing these conversations with you.

I am pleased to share that the governor has signed Michigan’s balanced, bipartisan FY 2026-27 budget. This budget invests in Michigan’s schools, healthcare, infrastructure, and local communities while addressing rising costs for working families across the state.

I’m especially proud that this budget brings real investments home to Dearborn, including $1 million to modernize our police and fire facilities, $500,000 to expand the ACCESS Innovation Center, $500,000 for LAHC’s after-school programs, and $250,000 to help veterans train for good-paying careers in the skilled trades. These are the kinds of investments that make our neighborhoods safer, create opportunities for working families, and move Dearborn forward.

At its core, the state budget is about people. I’m focused on making sure families have access to opportunity, students can build their futures here at home, and our communities have the reliable services they need to thrive. I will continue working to ensure our community’s priorities are reflected in the decisions made in Lansing.

August was National Black Business Month, a time to recognize and celebrate Black entrepreneurs and business owners who strengthen and revitalize our communities.

Small businesses are an important part of Michigan’s economy, creating jobs, providing essential services, and helping neighborhoods thrive. This month is an opportunity to recognize the hard work and innovation of Black business owners while supporting an environment where entrepreneurs from every background can succeed.

One of my favorite parts of serving as your state representative is visiting teachers, small-business owners, and others to offer our gratitude for the work they do to support our community daily.
