Treasurer Eubanks,
I am writing to you today in regard to the months-long delay of an overwhelming amount of Michigan tax refunds. This year my office, like many other legislative offices, has received a concerning amount of inquiries from constituents who still have not received their tax refunds after filing over 4 months ago. Since March of this year, my office has received 64 separate inquiries regarding the delay in state tax refunds and every week, we receive more inquiries.
For many Michiganders, their tax refund is the difference between being able to pay their rent, fix their car, buy groceries for their families, and put gas in their tank to get to work. While I understand that mistakes happen, and the department was utilizing a new processing system while also receiving an unprecedented amount of early returns, it has now been months since this problem arose, and it is time to rectify the situation and get Michiganders their money.
This is not how government should function. Our constituents should not be left in the dark and given inaccurate timelines regarding when their tax dollars, which they are owed, will be returned to them. My district’s feedback has been loud and clear; they view this year’s tax refund rollout as inefficient and unacceptable, and I agree with them. As the state representative of District 103, I am strongly urging the Department of Treasury to process refunds as quickly as possible and to create further transparency surrounding the timeline of when Michiganders will receive their returns.
Thank you for your time and I look forward to your response.
Sincerely,
Betsy Coffia
State Representative
House District 103
