Proposed Congressional deep cuts to Medicaid are reckless and counter-productive especially for rural areas like ours. They’ll hurt the people who need help the most: seniors, kids and people with disabilities, all while devastating rural hospitals and nursing homes. We must do better for our communities. ... I am devastated to hear of the murder of Minnesota State Representative and former House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband and the shooting of state Senator John Hoffman and his wife early this morning. All four were shot at their homes in what investigators are calling politically motivated shootings by an individual impersonating a police officer. They found a manifesto in his vehicle with a list of other lawmakers he planned to target.
My heart goes out to their families and I’m hoping for healing for Sen. Hoffman and his wife.
I condemn this and all acts of political violence and urge all Americans of good conscience to join me in doing the same and uplifting the families and praying for healing for the survivors.

As your state representative, it's my job to work with colleagues across the state to pass a final budget for the sake of Michigan's kids. When House Republicans introduced their school aid budget, which cuts funding for rural classrooms and busing, I stood up to amplify the voices for northern Michigan's rural school districts, students, educators, and families.
Republicans tried to silence me and the concerns of rural school leaders from our community. I am willing to work across the aisle to provide the necessary funding for Leelanau, Benzie, and Grand Traverse County schools, but Republicans must as well. This Republican budget defunds crucial programs for kids and families like school safety, mental health, universal breakfast and lunch and strips out the rural school transportation equity formula I successfully championed in the past two state budgets – which is why I voted no.
