As a proud Northwestern Michigan College alumna, I was happy to join the groundbreaking ceremony for the renovation of their new aviation hangar. I worked with State Senator John Damoose to bring home $3.75 million in the state budget to help fund this renovation, which will bring the current 48-year-old facility into the future to store and maintain its fleet of technically advanced aircraft and help grow the next generation of skilled pilots right here at home! ... This year's 2024 Michigan Works! Association Conference was in Traverse City. I enjoyed speaking with LEO director Susan Corbin and learning more about Networks Northwest and its programs, including Northwest Michigan Works!

Thank you to Janie McNabb of Networks Northwest, Jessica Willis of Michigan Works and your team as you work to boost employment and education in our region.

Great to celebrate BATA’s New Headquarters at an Open House Celebration this evening! When complete it will combine public transit services with childcare and workforce housing, two of our region’s greatest needs. Congratulations and thank you to BATA director Kelly Dunham, the BATA Board, Traverse City Housing Commission and the many ccommunity partners who made this innovative project a reality. ... As the proud granddaughter of two combat veterans, I was honored to be with the Grand Traverse Area Veterans Coalition this evening and provide a legislative update on the work we’ve done to support active duty military, veterans and their families in my first term. I appreciated the invite from Joe Meredith (shown).
A summary:

To start off, I want to highlight a piece of legislation that I introduced that would expand eligibility for the state’s Veterans Trust Fund to honorably-discharged peacetime veterans.

This is a fund that provides emergency grants to veterans to help them overcome unexpected expenses ranging from utility bills to home repairs to mortgage assistance and get back on their feet financially.

However, the fund is currently limited to wartime veterans, which ultimately excludes about a quarter of all veterans living in Michigan.

Before my time as a state representative, I was also a Grand Traverse County commissioner, and I worked closely with the county Veterans Affairs Office, who brought this issue and the need for state legislation to my attention so that we as a state can support all honorably-discharged veterans who have dedicated their lives to serving our country.

In addition, I was proud to vote in support of a bipartisan bill that Gov. Whitmer signed into law last May to expand Michigan’s National Guard tuition assistance program to cover spouses and dependents, lowering the cost of higher education for military families.

The state of Michigan, under Gov. Whitmer’s leadership, has also facilitated a partnership between the Michigan National Guard and Michigan Helmets to Hardhats, a program connecting veterans to skill-training opportunities and careers in the construction trades.

As the state representative of Michigan’s 103rd House District, I am committed to ensuring that the Michigan National Guard and all Michigan veterans receive the support, resources, and recognition they deserve.

Just this summer, Gov. Whitmer signed Senate Bills 388 and 389 into law, bills I voted to support.

These bills put our active-duty military service members and reserve members first by amending the dormancy periods for certain kinds of unclaimed property owned by active-duty members in Michigan.

The legislation directly benefits active-duty members and reserves, giving them adequate time to manage their affairs during their military obligations and reducing the risk of losing property to the state.

Together, Senate Bills 388 and 389 will make sure our veterans’ credit union accounts are waiting for them when they return home from service, so they don’t have to worry during deployment.

Ensuring our Michigan veterans come home to a supportive and welcoming community is one of the easiest ways we can honor the sacrifices they have made for our country.

Last year, the Michigan Legislature also passed now-enacted bipartisan legislation to ensure spouses of disabled veterans can maintain property tax exemptions, even after their spouse passes away, lowering costs for themselves and their families.

Additionally, we have also made significant investments in suicide prevention, opened two new Michigan Veteran Homes, and granted all veterans free access to state parks.

One final development that I want to highlight is the $2.5 million we allocated in the state budget to fund grants to nonprofit organizations to reduce veteran homelessness.

I am proud to work across the aisle to stand with our service members and veterans.

This is one of the primary reasons you have my total support. Thank you Veterans!

Grand Traverse County residents: If you or someone you know is 21 - 24 years old and hasn’t finished college, you can get a tuition-free degree or trades certification through MI Reconnect! This opportunity is available until Dec. 31, 2024.

As an alumna of Northwestern Michigan College, I was proud to vote to make college more affordable in Michigan, so more students can pursue a degree and realize their dreams.

Thank You so Much Betsie! Getting into College has blessed my Grandson so much. He has gone thru so much in his 18 years but kept going.

Did you know your office sent a letter to Katie regarding this? She’s only 19 and hasn’t completed her K-12 education yet…this you do know. That’s your disconnect.

I was glad to get the chance to join this year’s Behavioral Health Initiative Summit this morning at the Hagerty Center. Sponsored by the Northwest Michigan Community Health Innovation Region, this summit is designed to empower cross-sector stakeholders with the knowledge and resources needed to improve access to behavioral health services and enhance well-being and resiliency. I am excited that this legislative session we passed the bill to protect telehealth access by requiring insurance companies to cover telehealth visits at parity and also passed a bill to cut the time in half from two years to one, for school social workers to be able to move here from other states and begin serving our students. AND I know there is significant work still to do to drastically expand access to behavioral health services especially in rural regions like ours; it will remain a top area of focus for me because it’s so important to individuals children and families in serious need of greater access. Events like these help me take a pulse check and sharpen my focus for legislative advocacy. ... See MoreSee Less
