MERIDIAN TWP., Mich., Jan. 7, 2025 — Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel issued an opinion today declaring that House Republicans’ maneuver to clawback $645 million in previously approved work project funding was unconstitutional. The opinion follows weeks of immediate and relentless actions from legislative Democrats fighting to urge the restoration of dollars promised to kids, moms, families, small businesses and more.
In response, state Rep. Julie Brixie (D-Meridian Twp.) issued the following statement:
“Last month, I made it clear that ripping back already approved funding is a blatant abuse of power. Today, the Attorney General’s opinion affirmed that assessment. Beyond being deeply harmful to the millions of Michiganders who depend on these resources, the Republicans’ action was unconstitutional.
“Today shows that my Democratic colleagues and I do not back down in the face of Republican callousness. I remain as committed as ever to restoring this funding so that these nonprofits and community organizations can continue their important work uplifting Michigan families across our state.”
