Dear Neighbor,

We are a few months into my second term as your state representative, and I am thrilled to be reaching out with my first update of the year. During these times of increasing political turmoil, I want you to know that my office is just a call or email away to assist you, and I encourage you to reach out. My team and I are working hard in Lansing to make sure that we are meeting the needs of these challenging times.

These cold days have only served to galvanize my focus on the things that matter to Michiganders most— affordable housing, jobs and support for families, to name a few. These will be the main focus of this next legislative session. You can also see that reflected in my committee placements. This session I will be serving on the House committees on Regulatory Reform and Transportation and as the minority vice chair of the Economic Competitiveness Committee. We are at the start of a new term and committees have only just started to meet, but I look forward to sharing updates in the coming month.

Below you will find updates and helpful information from my staff. I also encourage you to reach out to my office for any reason – we are here to serve you! Contact my office at KristianGrant@house.mi.gov and/or (517) 373-1800.

February Highlights

Michigan Legislative Black Caucus
The Michigan Legislative Black Caucus is a coalition of 20+ state legislators committed to ensuring that all citizens of our state have equal opportunities. The Black Caucus serves as a partnership between residents and legislators – believing that legislators and residents can affect the most change by working in tandem.

This month I was appointed to the executive board of the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus and will serve as the Second Vice Chair of the caucus.

Celebrating Ms. Hattie Beverly with Grand Rapids Public Schools
There were many exciting events honoring Black History this month. A special highlight was renaming Grand Rapids Public Schools’ (GRPS) Teacher Cadet Program for Ms. Hattie Beverly – the first African American school teacher for GRPS. In 1899, Beverly broke down barriers by graduating from this very program and paving the way for Black teachers in Grand Rapids. Our future is brighter because of her amazing legacy!

Legislative Update
I have had four more bills signed into law as public acts.  Please click on the links near the short summaries of each bill to learn more about the legislation:

Public Act 204 of 2024 & Public Act 205 of 2024 – Improves land banks to boost redevelopment in our communities.

House Bill Public Act 248 of 2024 – Expands maternal health support.

House Bill Public Act 260 of 2024 – Updates legal sentencing guidelines for hate crimes.
