Hello Neighbor,
In Lansing, we are at a standstill on many issues, but the most pressing for Michiganders is the School Aid budget. I believe we need to fund nutritious and healthy meals for our students. We need to prioritize teacher recruitment and retainment. We need to help districts build the best school buildings. We need to make sure support staff and administrators have the resources they need to do their jobs and that every school district has social work and mental health services available for students. The extracurricular activities that fuel our children’s ambitions and dreams need to be maintained. Every school needs to have a nurse on hand. I can continue to add to my list of priorities, but first and foremost, we need legislators coming together to put people over politics. As the Minority Vice Chair of the House Education and Workforce Committee, I understand that our school districts need investments for a better Michigan, not divestment.
Please continue to share your education priorities with me as I continue to fight for you, our kids and the future of our state. Additionally, please click here and fill out my Vision Project survey to make sure your priorities and voice is heard.
In solidarity,

Jimmie Wilson, Jr.
State Representative
House District 32

State Rep. Jimmie Wilson, Jr. (D-Ypsilanti) posing with state Reps. Kathy Schmaltz (R-Jackson), Jason Morgan (D-Ann Arbor) and Carrie Rheingans (D-Ann Arbor) on May 31, 2025, celebrating “60 years of Head Start” in the Washtenaw Intermediate School District in Washtenaw County.

Education and Workforce Policy Committee:
The Education and Workforce Committee did not meet in July of 2025.
While the committee won’t be meeting this summer, my office is working on a bill to help put extra dollars into school districts for the purpose of building infrastructure. Our school districts need consistent and reliable resources to maintain, repair and update our buildings.
Transportation and Infrastructure Policy Committee:
State Rep. Jay DeBoyer (R-Clay) has introduced House Bill 4349.
HB 4349 would amend the Home Rule City Act to allow cities to authorize the creation of a special assessment district to fund maintenance and improvements for a private road.
This bill, similar to Senate Bill 896 of the 2023-2024 legislative session, would give local legislative bodies the tools to assist with road management in their communities.
For more information on these committees, please reach out to my office or click here.
Legislation Highlight:
Requiring Law Enforcement Accountability: House Bill 4760.
This bill, introduced by state Rep. Betsy Coffia (D-Traverse City), would prohibit law enforcement officers from using facial coverings or disguises in certain circumstances and require appropriate identification to be available. I am happy to co-sponsor this legislation to make sure anyone trying to police our communities can be held accountable. Accountability helps build trust between law enforcement and the neighborhoods they serve.

Immigration Town Hall Resources:
Thank you to everyone who attended our virtual town hall on immigration earlier this year. I was joined by special guests Washtenaw County Sheriff Alyshia Dyer and the Michigan American Civil Liberties Union as we discussed immigration rights and resources.
