Legislative Update

I’m Fighting For You, to Pass a Budget, Defend Our Schools and Prevent a Government Shutdown

In addition to the uncertainty tariffs are causing during this back-to-school season, the Legislature has still not successfully negotiated and passed a final budget. This failure has left Michigan’s school districts in limbo, forcing schools to cut programs like universal school lunches and to lay off teachers. Negotiating the budget for the state by July 1 is one of the only deadlines of the Legislature that is outlined in the state statute — meaning it is one of our single greatest duties.

Michigan kids deserve better. They deserve access to free meals and reliable transportation to school. These services are vital for students to perform better in the long run. I will continue to call on the Speaker and Michigan House Republicans to negotiate a commonsense, comprehensive and bipartisan budget with the Senate and governor as soon as possible.

I am continuously working to make life more affordable. House Democrats are in your corner. We recently introduced an Investing in Education package to protect critical school funding for schools, universal breakfast and lunch, special education, rural bussing, mental health and school safety, and other categorical funding. I won’t stop pressing for investments in schools, funding for kids and breathing room for families.

Community Update and Resources

2025 9/11 Memorial Ceremony

9/11 is a solemn reminder of bravery, sacrifice and unity. We honor the first responders who answered the call then — and the local first responders who continue that mission of service in our community today.

It was an honor to stand alongside Wyoming Fire Chief Dennis VanTassell at the Michigan Legislature’s 2025 9/11 Memorial Ceremony. We remembered the lives lost on 9/11, honored the bravery of all first responders who ran toward danger and gave thanks for the firefighters, EMTs and police officers in our community today, whose service and sacrifice carry on a powerful legacy.
