Greetings Neighbor!

I want to say “Thank You” for the way the community shows up to events and for the way you keep me up to date on issues that matter to you.

This newsletter has a few updates on important issues I’ve been working on that will continue to impact the lives of Michiganders. I have been an advocate and leader in crafting better policies around issues like protecting survivors of domestic violence, child welfare and balancing public safety with privacy.

Soon we’ll be hearing the last State of the State address from the governor. I expect her to build upon her recently released FY27 budget recommendations. We are facing some challenging times as budget cuts from the President’s so-called Big Beautiful Bill begin to be felt, but rest assured I will continue to fight for every dollar we need and deserve, especially for health care and education.

I’ll have more to say in the next newsletter after the address so stay tuned.

Blessings,

Rep. Steph

Stephanie A. Young

State Representative

House District 16

REMINDER! FREE Black History Month Discussion Saturday, Feb. 21

I’m looking forward to seeing the community for this special Black History Month event featuring special guest Detroiter, author and historian, Ken Coleman. Join us for a FREE discussion that highlights Michigan’s Black History! This is a family friendly event, with special book raffles and giveaways for families to read about Black history in their homes.

This event is at Christ the King Church on Saturday, Feb. 21, from 4-6 p.m. See you there!

House Members Celebrate Black History Month

Earlier this month on the House floor, I stood with my colleagues to introduce and adopt House Resolution 239, declaring February as Black History Month in the state of Michigan in honor of the history, culture and contributions of African Americans here at home and across the United States.

An excerpt from this year’s resolution highlights the importance of this recognition: “The story of Black history is inseparable from the story of American history, reflecting the ideals of perseverance, hard work, faith in opportunity, and belief in the promise of liberty and equal justice under the law…” (HR 239).

Brunch and Learn Recap: Cameras in Our Communities: What We Need to Know

This month, I had the pleasure of co-hosting a bi-partisan Brunch and Learn event in partnership with my colleagues state Reps. Jimmie Wilson (D-Ypsilanti) and Douglas Wozniak (R-Macomb) and the ACLU of Michigan team.

I was an enthusiastic co-sponsor of House Bills 549293 which will provide some guardrails on the use of automatic license plate readers in our communities. This Brunch and Learn was a useful tool in sharing constituent concerns with my colleagues and other elected officials from communities across the state. We will continue to uplift this issue and push for better transparency and regulation around the usage of this growing technology in our neighborhoods.

Rep. Young in the District – Thurston School

I recently had the pleasure of cheering for the fierce varsity basketball team at Thurston High School in South Redford Township. I was also able to present them with a lifesaving AED (automated external defibrillator) during halftime.

The NFL donated 50 of these important devices after a two-bill package I wholeheartedly supported was signed into law. This law requires Michigan public schools to implement comprehensive cardiac emergency response plans, install AEDs accessible within one to three minutes and mandate CPR/AED certification for all high school coaches.
