One of my top priorities in Lansing is making sure our community’s students, teachers, staff and families have the support they need for a safe and successful school year. I worked with my colleagues to pass a budget in July that continues to set schools up for success. Legislative Updates

Budget Update After a 21-hour marathon session in July, I was happy to have delivered a budget that fights to make life better here in West Michigan. This budget is not perfect, and it is certainly a compromise due to a divided government, but it represents values I stand by: that every Michigander deserves the opportunity to thrive, get a quality education, work with dignity and get the healthcare they need. As kids settle back into the classroom, I want to share that our local school districts are set to receive more than $21 million in additional funding this school year! Additionally, we continued free school breakfast and lunch, so no child goes to class on an empty stomach, and we invested more in literacy learning support to help ensure every teacher is supported and every child has the resources they need to gain the power of reading.

Building More Affordable Housing This summer, I’m proud to have helped pass legislation to bring down rent and mortgage costs and to make it easier to build more affordable housing. The governor came to Grand Rapids to sign bills into law that will help build 2,500 new units each year, revitalize housing that is already here and expand the housing types developers can focus on. I want to thank my fellow colleagues, state Reps. Kristian Grant and Stephen Wooden, for working hard to get this necessary step for building more affordable housing across the finish line. I am continuing to focus on uplifting and developing policies that will make West Michigan a more affordable place for everyone.
