Congratulations to our May Teacher of the Month, Kailey Farrand! Kailey is a second grade teacher at Washington Elementary School in Charlotte.

To quote her nominator, “She is kind, respectful, and teaches the whole child, not just academics. She creates a safe space for her students.”

Thank you, Kailey, for all that you do to support your students, and congratulations again on this recognition!

Our office is again taking nominations for District 76’s Teacher of the Month program. After this month, we will be taking a pause from teacher nominations during summer break, and we will resume the nomination program when school is back in session in the fall.

What a great Saturday for our Senior Healthy Aging Fair a few weeks ago. The Senior Healthy Aging Fair was fantastic. We gave away more than 100 bags in 15 minutes. Great speakers. Great informational booths and fantastic treats and coffee from Flour Child Bakery.

I even had my mom, my sister Denise, my husband Bruce and my oldest fun friends Lisa and Brian stop by. I appreciate all the kind words and the time you spent with us. Special thanks to Joci, Yvonne and Maggie for putting together a great event to honor our seniors.

I often think how fortunate I am to represent such a diverse district. One night at the beginning of June, I celebrated the graduation of one of our youth advisory council members and then decided to drive through the rural part of our district. I drove past some of my favorite farms. It’s such a beautiful sight to see the acres and acres of new growth. Farming is Michigan’s second largest industry and one of the most important as farmers grow the food we eat.

It was a beautiful night and I stopped by my son and daughter-in-law’s mini farm to see my brand new grandson. Blessings all around us.

It has been a privilege to represent the people of Michigan. I was recently asked to speak at the gala celebrating the 100th anniversary of IBEW Local 665. I saw many friends and expressed my gratitude for the great work they do in our state. My son is a proud member of IBEW so I know first-hand the opportunities they give to their members. Congratulations!

Earlier this month, I spoke and presented a tribute to the Dorothy Hull Library in Windsor Township in celebration of their 75th anniversary. Congratulations to the community and the team at the library for reaching this milestone!

I attended the Michigan Pipe Trades Association-District 2 Apprentice Competition at the UA Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 333 Training Center.

I was asked to speak at the Michigan Chamber Day at the Capitol on a bipartisan panel with other legislative leaders sharing our perspectives on the state’s top priorities.

Eaton County residents have an opportunity to guide the work of the Eaton County Conservation District, to ensure they focus resources on the issues that matter most to our community. I want to notify you of this opportunity to respond to their district needs survey, which closes on Tuesday, June 30.

This survey is conducted once every five years to guide their work. If you are interested in voicing your opinion to the Eaton County Conservation District, the survey is available here: Eaton County Conservation Needs Assessment – 2026, and more information can be found online on their website.

I recently helped secure a $2.5 million grant through the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy to further ease the cost on homeowners impacted by the Bank Intercounty Drain Project.

Last term as the House Appropriations chair, I worked with state Sen. Sarah Anthony to bring home $5 million to help offset these costs.

In last year’s budget, I requested $10 million to decrease remaining costs, and I am continuing to push for that relief in this year’s budget, along with negotiating with federal counterparts to secure additional federal aid. I have tried to help with this local issue. We need more transparency with our drain commission. Many fellow representatives and I have been working on legislation for almost a year to address transparency and petitions. I am also continuing to pursue other legislative proposals to bring forward this much needed reform to the drain code.
