LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

Budget Update

This past month, my colleagues and I have been working hard to finalize a fiscal year (FY) 2023-24 budget. While budget negotiations are still ongoing, the House Appropriations Committee has passed out the budget bills to fund Michigan’s state departments. These budget bills will soon be taken up to the House floor for a vote. The state Senate is also working on its version of the FY 2023-24 budget, and negotiations between the two chambers will soon begin.

As the chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, I am most excited about my proposed investments in the Michigan Department of Transportation budget. This is the most mobility-rich proposed budget in the history of the Michigan Legislature, while also emphasizing the dire need to further invest in our infrastructure.

Some of the investments I am most excited about include:

  • Local road funding.
  • Local bus operating.
  • Aerial mobility and drone infrastructure.
  • E-bike purchase incentive program.
  • Inductive charging interoperability pilot.
  • Shared Streets/Spaces Grant Program.
  • And so much more!

It is often said that a budget is a statement of our priorities. I am excited to work toward a budget that makes crucial investments in schools, roads and infrastructure, child care, job creation, health care and more key investments across our state.

House Passes Legislation

to Stop Distracted Driving

Last week, the Michigan House of Representatives passed bipartisan legislation aimed at curbing distracted driving in Michigan. These bills would make it illegal for drivers to use electronic devices while operating a vehicle.

House Bills 425052 would prohibit the use of handheld electronic devices while driving and establish the penalties for use of a handheld device while driving. The legislation would also require the Department of State Police to share data on distracted driving violations.

I look forward to these commonsense measures to keep our roads safe being passed in the Michigan Senate.

WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO

Take Your Child to Work Day

On April 27, I was proud to be joined by my three sons in the Michigan Capitol for Take Your Child to Work Day. They joined me for House session and meetings in my office and got to watch me chair the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation.
