PONTIAC, Mich., Feb. 5, 2026 — Today, students from Pontiac and Waterford Twp. continued to protest in response to Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents’ actions by hosting a walkout. This follows reports of a targeted (ICE) operation in Pontiac over the weekend. After news of the walkout, state Rep. Brenda Carter (D-Pontiac) issued the following statement:
“What we’re seeing from our students is courage, plain and simple. These young people are standing up for their classmates, their families and their neighbors in the face of policies that spread fear in our schools and communities. Education should be a place of safety, not a pipeline to deportation or detention. Seeing our students push back against oppression shows that we have a bright future. I stand with these students and their right to speak out, and I am calling on leaders to end practices that wrongfully criminalize families and traumatize children.”
