MDHHS directed to stop issuance of November disbursements due to Federal Gov. Shutdown
LANSING, Mich., Oct. 27, 2025 — Last week, the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services (MDHHS) announced it was directed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to pause issuing November SNAP benefits because of the federal funding lapse due to the federal government shutdown. In response, state Rep. Brenda Carter (D-Pontiac) issued the following statement:
“More than 9,500 individuals and families in our community alone rely on SNAP to put and keep food on the table. These are people who work hard everyday to provide for those who just need a little extra support. Putting millions of people at risk of starvation right before the holidays is just cruel. We have a moral and civic duty to ensure that no American goes hungry. The strength of our nation is measured not by how we treat the powerful, but by how we care for the most vulnerable among us. While we press for Republicans to come to a federal resolution, I encourage people to dial 2-1-1 for free, confidential assistance to local food programs and support services. SNAP participants may also visit the Food Bank Council of Michigan to locate nearby food banks, check MI Bridges for updates or contact their local MDHHS office with questions.”
