Press Statement | Sept. 2, 2025 DETROIT, Mich., Sept. 2, 2025 — State Rep. Tyrone Carter (D-Detroit), a former Wayne County Sheriff’s lieutenant, issued the following statement after voting against House Bill 4706, the Republican majority’s omnibus budget proposal. The bill makes deep cuts to public safety, including $66 million from the Michigan State Police, the loss of hundreds of corrections and law enforcement positions and the rollback of community violence prevention programs. “I spent 25 years in law enforcement, and I know firsthand that public safety requires smart investments, not neglect. The Republican budget cuts $66 million from the Michigan State Police, eliminates hundreds of corrections and law enforcement positions and guts critical community violence prevention programs. That isn’t fiscal responsibility; it’s defunding the very services and people that protect our neighborhoods. “Slashing state police funding and eliminating corrections and public safety positions means slower response times, fewer patrols in our neighborhoods and weaker violence prevention programs that keep our kids safe — these cuts will push an already strained system past its limits. I cannot and will not support a budget that turns its back on people and their right to safety. I remain committed to protecting Michigan families by ensuring law enforcement and public safety professionals have the resources they need to do their jobs.” |
