LANSING, Mich., July 3, 2025 — July 1 is the deadline for the legislature to pass and present a budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year to the governor. Since gaining a majority, House Republicans have delayed the budget process, refusing to come to the negotiation table in good-faith. After the deadline, state Rep. Brenda Carter (D-Pontiac) issued the following statement:

“As the former President of both the Pontiac School Board and the Michigan Association of Schools Boards, I know firsthand how critical the July 1st deadline is for our schools and communities. When the House majority fails to deliver a budget on time, it creates chaos — school districts can’t finalize contracts with their unions, families are left in the dark about school meal costs and essential programs hang in the balance. My priority is clear: lowering costs and providing stability for the families I represent. Delaying the budget only deepens uncertainty and makes it harder for working families to plan for the year ahead.”
