LANSING, Mich., March 12, 2026 — A lockdown was put in place in West Bloomfield and surrounding communities after a truck rammed into Temple Israel and shots were fired just before 1 p.m. today. Law enforcement sent a message to staff indicating the shooter had been killed, but the lockdown would remain in place while the scene is secured.
In response, state Rep. Brenda Carter (D-Pontiac) issued the following statement:
“I’m deeply saddened by the violent attack on Temple Israel in West Bloomfield. My heart is with the community and the families who were forced to experience such a terrifying moment in a place meant for worship, learning and peace.
“I have been in contact with the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office and am grateful for the swift and courageous response from law enforcement and security personnel who prevented further harm. Their actions helped ensure that congregants, staff and children at the synagogue’s preschool were kept safe.
“Houses of worship should always be places of peace and community. As we continue to learn more about what happened, we must also reaffirm our commitment to sensible firearm reforms and stronger measures that help prevent acts of violence like this from happening again. My heart remains with everyone impacted today.”
