LANSING, Mich., Sept. 10, 2026 — Today the Michigan Senate passed nine bills that were reintroduced after House Republicans spent nearly two years and more than $300,000 in taxpayer money fighting to keep financial relief from reaching Michigan families. Among the legislation is companion legislation to state Rep. Brenda Carter’s (D-Pontiac) bill, HB 6229, which revises maximum value amounts for certain properties exempt from bankruptcy proceedings. After the Senate passed Senate Bill 1138 Carter issued the following statement:
“When Michiganders face financial setbacks, they deserve a fair chance to recover without losing the property they rely on to rebuild their lives. House Democrats stand with Senate Democrats in the fight to get these critical protections signed into law. House Republicans need to do the right thing for workers and bring this legislation up for a vote — they stood in the way last time, I urge them to right their wrong this time.”
