Carter Votes for State Budget, Delivers Public Safety and Stability for Detroit Families
DETROIT, Mich., Oct. 7, 2025 — Last week, the Michigan Legislature passed the final FY 2025-26 General and School Aid budgets, funding a combined $78 billion for state and school operations. The plan delivers record funding for Michigan schools, nearly $2 billion for road and infrastructure repairs and critical resources for public safety. The budget secures investments in the State Police and correctional facilities, improves reentry programs to reduce recidivism, and protects Medicaid, food assistance and universal school meals in schools. After months of uncertainty, the finalized budget provides stability for local governments, schools, and families. After the vote, state Rep. Tyrone Carter (D-Detroit) issued the following statement: “This budget is about stability, health and opportunity for Michigan families. It protects Medicaid coverage, delivers a record per-pupil investment of $10,050, continues no-cost school meals for every child, preserves food nutrition assistance and establishes a new public safety revenue sharing fund. These are essentials that families in Detroit and Wayne County depend on every single day. After months of uncertainty, this plan provides the stability our communities deserve: local governments can plan responsibly, families can count on health care and nutrition for their children and neighborhoods know that core services will be there. “It also makes the targeted investments needed to strengthen public safety. We are raising pay and providing support for the men and women who staff our prisons, preserving the community violence prevention programs that keep our neighborhoods safe and ensuring the Michigan State Police have the resources they need. The budget also sustains reentry services and health care in our correctional facilities so that returning citizens have a real chance at success and our communities can remain strong. “In sum, this budget honors the people who keep us safe while protecting the well-being of every family. I am proud to stand with my Democratic colleagues in delivering these priorities for the people of Michigan.” |
