LANSING, Mich., May 11, 2023 — The Michigan House of Representatives passed its recommended fiscal 2023-24 budget yesterday. It includes the largest investment in education in Michigan’s history and substantial investments in workforce recruitment and retention, infrastructure, and public safety. State Rep. Betsy Coffia (D-Traverse City) secured an amendment to increase funding for affordable housing across the state by $50 million, to a total of $150 million. After the vote, Coffia issued the following statement:

“Michigan is in the midst of a housing crisis, perhaps nowhere more acutely than in Northwest Michigan. I will continue fighting for affordable housing for the people of my district, and I’m proud that we are dedicating serious resources to the problem. In addition, this proposed budget funds more slots for quality preschool to assist more families in northern Michigan and across the state. This is a budget that works for my constituents and people all across the state.”
