LANSING, Mich., Jan. 9, 2025 — Michigan State Attorney General Dana Nessel issued an opinion concluding that House Republicans’ maneuver to clawback $645 million in previously-approved funding was unconstitutional. The opinion follows weeks of immediate and relentless actions from legislative Democrats fighting to restore the dollars promised to kids, moms, families, small businesses and more. In response to Nessel’s opinion, state Rep. Jennifer Conlin (D-Ann Arbor Charter Twp.) issued the following statement:

“This opinion shows that this GOP action overstepped legal bounds. Michigan families rely on the very programs that were attacked — from lifelines for mothers and babies to programs for our veterans and seniors. Unwarranted funding cuts and decisions like this make it harder for people to access the help they need, shaking confidence in our state. Michiganders deserve certainty not chaos.”
