DETROIT — A group of Detroit public officials hosted a town hall on auto insurance at Focus: HOPE in Detroit. State Reps. Sherry Gay-Dagnogo (D-Detroit) and Tyrone Carter (D-Detroit) joined Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (D-Detroit) and state Sen. Stephanie Chang (D-Detroit) this Wednesday, April 24, to discuss the high cost of auto insurance in Detroit and potential solutions to lower rates. Among the solutions discussed was Congresswoman Tlaib’s House Resolution 1756, which would bar credit bureaus from providing consumer information to persons or organizations involved in determining auto insurance rates.
“No Detroiter should pay more for their insurance based on factors like credit scores or ZIP codes that have nothing to do with their ability to drive,” said Rep. Gay-Dagnogo. “In Lansing, I remain committed to finding solutions for fair and affordable insurance for all Michigan drivers and that requires an end to discriminatory rate-setting practices. I look forward to driving this conversation forward with the reintroduction of a package of bipartisan bills from last term as we fight to lower rates without sacrificing the quality of care for Michigan drivers.”
Michigan has the highest auto insurance rates in the nation, with Detroiters paying the highest rates of any city across the state. Rep. Gay-Dagnogo will be hosting another auto insurance town hall on Monday, April 29, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Wayne County Community College’s Larry K. Lewis Education Building.
“It is time to come together to find common ground on this issue that puts up roadblocks for families across our city and state, keeping residents from moving forward and improving their lives,” said Rep. Carter. “Lowering auto insurance rates would have the immediate effect of jumpstarting Detroit’s economy and the economies of other cities across our state.”
