District 10 Updates: Local U.S. Olympians, Minnesota Day of Solidarity, Senior Auto Savings, and More

📰 E-Newsletter | Feb. 19, 2026 | Office of State Rep. Veronica Paiz

Hello, House District 10!

I am so proud – and excited – that House District 10 has TWO OLYMPIANS at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympic Games! Emilea Zingas, a Grosse Pointe South graduate, competed in Ice Dance, and native Grosse Pointer Zach Werenski, who is a NHL defenseman with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Zingas and her partner placed 5th in Ice Dance — an impressive feat for first time Olympians and I look forward to seeing them at the next winter Olympics. Werenski is playing defense for Team U.S.A., which is currently dominating all other teams!

On a legislative note, in late January, I traveled to Minnesota to join over 40 state Representatives and Senators from 13 states for the Day of Solidarity with Minnesota legislators amid growing concern over Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) extremist actions. While there, I attended a Senate subcommittee meeting about the legalities of ICE’s actions and impacts on Minnesotans. I also met with local community activists, and the parents of children in daycare centers who explained to me their struggles to protect children from the trauma of ICE’s assaults on schools and youth. Federal law enforcement should never cost lives or undermine the safety and dignity of children and communities.

In early March, I’ll be joining colleagues in Alabama for the Bloody Sunday Commemoration — a weekend reflecting on the Civil Rights Movement and the work still ahead of us. The weekend will conclude with the 61st Annual Selma Bridge Crossing Jubilee, a walk across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in honor of the 1965 civil rights march. I look forward to filling you in about this “All Boots On the Bridge” event in next month’s newsletter.

Listed below are legislative updates and dates for community conversations. When possible, I do attend neighborhood community meetings. As always, you’re welcome to contact my office for suggestions and ideas for coffee hours, town halls, tributes, and more.

Warm regards,

Veronica A. Paiz
State Representative
House District 10

🏛️ Legislative Updates

Schools of Choice. At the end of last year, a bipartisan bill package was introduced that would require all Michigan school districts to accept enrollment applications from nonresident students if the district has available capacity. The bills were given a hearing in the House Education and Workforce Committee (of which I’m not a member), which has yet to vote on whether to report the legislation to the House floor for a vote. I have serious concerns about the bill package, as do some colleagues on both sides of the aisle, and will keep you updated. Suffice to say, I believe in school districts’ autonomy.

Day of Solidarity in Minnesota. I traveled to Minnesota in late January to listen, bear witness and stand in solidarity with people who are grieving and afraid. The fatal shootings of nonviolent people exercising their First Amendment rights were tragedies, and we the people were here to demand accountability and justice. Michigan must be vigilant in preventing and pushing back against practices that endanger lives and erode trust in government. Illegal detention and assault; intimidation and threats; destabilization of workplaces, schools, hospitals; and more by the federal government have no place in a country whose Pledge of Allegiance declares “liberty and justice for all.”

📜 Legislation Introduced

HB 5523 – The Cutting Auto Rates for Seniors (C.A.R.S. Act) aims to lower seniors’ auto insurance rates by requiring all auto insurance companies to offer a premium discount to drivers age 50+ who complete Michigan’s mature driver safety course. (Currently, only some insurance companies offer a discount.)
