Press Release

LANSING, Mich., Nov. 4, 2025 — State Rep. Alabas Farhat (D-Dearborn) today condemned the halt to SNAP benefits that began on Nov. 1 due to the federal government shutdown, warning of devastating consequences for Michigan’s working class families. Nearly 1.4 million Michiganders — including more than 50,000 residents in District 3 — lost this vital support.

“D.C. Republicans are taking food off the tables of thousands of my constituents and millions of working Michiganders who are already struggling to make ends meet,” Farhat said. “These are people who go to work every day and are being punished because of petty politics.”

On Friday, Oct. 31, federal judges ruled that President Donald Trump’s administration must continue to fund SNAP, using contingency funds during the federal government shutdown. The administration said it would continue to fund SNAP benefits, but payments will be half the normal amount and delays are expected.

“The courts have recognized the importance of maintaining SNAP benefits. While I am glad the administration is adhering to this ruling, it’s still extremely concerning that payments will be dramatically reduced and arrive late,” Farhat concluded. “People need support now; I will keep fighting to ensure our communities don’t pay the price for dysfunction in Washington.”
