Update on the $645 Million Funding Dispute
|
|
Earlier in December, the Republican-led House Appropriations Committee voted to cancel nearly $645 million in previously approved funding that supported community projects across Michigan, including investments in public health, housing, infrastructure and essential local services. The decision was made without a public hearing or a clear accounting of which projects were affected, creating uncertainty for communities and On Jan. 7, 2026, the Michigan Attorney General issued a formal opinion concluding that the committee’s action violated the Michigan Constitution and that the funding should be restored. While state departments have indicated they intend to move forward with issuing the funds, House Republican leadership has filed a lawsuit seeking to block that action. I will continue monitoring developments closely and advocating for transparency, constitutional governance and responsible budgeting so that communities receive the resources they were promised and need. |
