For the past 4 years, I have had the incredible honor of serving the residents of both the 33rd and 55th districts! What an amazing privilege!

We brought millions of dollars back for our community for financial literacy, a neighborhood pool, a park, a non-profit, a water treatment facility, money used for school debt and money for supportive housing, to name some of the appropriations. Legislatively, I worked to pass bills around mental health including access to telehealth and banning conversion therapy for our kids, organ donation, gun violence prevention, local control issues, and bills to allow returning citizens access to drivers’ licenses and state ids upon release. There is still so much to do but I am proud of the work we have collectively achieved!

Thank you, residents, for allowing me to serve you! It has truly been the opportunity of a life time!

Now on to the next chapter!!

Thank you for all of your leadership and support of organ donation!!

Thank you for your service and for just being you! ❤️

Thank you for your relentless advocacy

Gun violence has no place in our communities. Michigan Democrats passed common-sense reforms like universal background checks, safe storage laws and red flag protections. When we work together, we make our state safer. #PuttingPeopleFirst ... See MoreSee Less

Brabec’s Gun Buyback Reform Bills Pass Out of Committee

LANSING, Mich., Dec. 11, 2024 — State Rep. Felicia Brabec’s (D-Pittsfield Township) two bills were voted out of the Military, Veterans and Homeland Security Committee yesterday as part of a gun buyback reform package. In December 2023, it was reported that some buyback programs created secondary gun markets by selling some firearm parts rather than destroying all of them. This package, House Bills 6144, 6145 and 6146, addresses that loophole by requiring Michigan law enforcement to destroy all parts of the collected or forfeited firearms.

“I was appalled to find out that across the nation, buyback programs were turning around and giving firearms a second chance,” said Brabec, chair of the Michigan Firearm Safety and Violence Prevention Caucus and sponsor of HBs 6144 and 6145. “This is simply unacceptable. I’ve been working hard to get this legislation ready — we must continue enacting policies to protect our communities, our kids and their futures. ”

Gun buyback programs allow Michiganders to turn their guns in, no questions asked. After the report, the Michigan State Police implemented a department-wide protocol to destroy bought or confiscated firearms, rather than engage in the secondary market. This legislation safeguards those protections and makes sure that this protocol is continued throughout the state.

“The legislation furthers the original buyback program’s intentions and addresses unforeseen consequences in its application,” Brabec continued. “It is crucial that we make this law. Clear guidelines can reduce gun violence and save lives. Let’s keep working for a safer Michigan.”

Cool but soooo disappointed that you voted for the Copperwood waste mine. Definitely not representing the values of Washtenaw county.

Why would you vote yes to approve the 50 million dollars to approve the Copperwood Waste Mine? This is a disgrace. Do you not care about Michigan as a whole and the environment?

I am very happy to have gotten the opportunity this past Wednesday to discuss the importance of gun violence legislation. I was also honored to speak alongside End Gun Violence Michigan, who I am thankful to have the chance to collaborate with. I can’t wait to see what we are able to achieve further to help Michigan’s communities.

Subtitles:
We have worked to diminish gun violence and advocate for better mechanisms that will save lives right here in Michigan.

During these efforts, I was very shocked, just as you were, when we read the New York Times Article a year ago. Do folks remember that? That New York Times article that came out, and we found out that our own Michigan State Police (MSP) weren’t completely destroying weapons, Right? We found that out. We did not know that, and so we got this (HB 6144) right away.

And it was so nice, we worked really well with MSP and we were able to come up with some solutions around that. But that means that we’re talking about thousands and thousands and thousands of guns. And so we’re wanting to make sure that those are off the street. These are guns from gun buyback programs, they’re guns that were used in the commission of a crime, they also might be police service weapons that are turned in for upgrades, that might also be the case.

Now MSP completely destroys every firearm that it gets. This is huge, this is huge. MSP should be commended for all of their work on this

We will work to make Michigan safer, and more and more address the terrible violence that impacts each and every one of us in so many awful, traumatic and tragic ways. We are with you and want to make sure we don’t have any more senseless deaths.

This week, I was joined by fellow Firearm Safety and Violence Prevention Caucus members, End Gun Violence Michigan, and community advocates for a press conference where we discussed life-saving legislation we're introducing to help address #GunViolence in our state.

We have made strides toward creating a safer Michigan over the past two years, and we will continue to prioritize the safety of Michiganders for generations to come, because far too many lives have been affected by gun violence. #EnoughIsEnough

Today we remember the lives lost as a result of transphobia. Transgender Day of Remembrance began in 1999 as a way to honor the late Rita Hester, a trans woman who was tragically murdered in Massachusetts. There are those in our communities who struggle with the grief of a lost loved one or are feeling rejected and unsafe in the wake of anti-trans bills across the country. It is important to be united against discrimination and uplift those who are suffering.

If you are feeling unsafe or struggling with thoughts of suicide, you don’t have to face these feelings alone. TransLifeline.org operates a hotline in both English and Spanish and has a list of community resources to get you the assistance you need.

What are you doing for the next 8 days to protect our environment and people? Our trans kids and our schools? The next 8 days are essential and if you and the rest of the dems do not get as many progressive bills through as possible, we your constituents will remember at the next election. Don't just remember our fallen siblings. Act to protect them. Act to ensure education for our children so that the next generation may be less petty, fearful, and ignorant. If you fail to so much as try, there will be nothing you can do that will ever secure mine or my partners votes going forward.
