Fitzgerald Seeks to Protect Quality Education in Face of Burdensome DOJ Investigation
WYOMING, Mich., Feb. 19, 2026 — The Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice (DOJ) launched an investigation yesterday into three Michigan public school districts, including Godfrey-Lee Public Schools, to assess their health education courses.
Recognizing the immense burden that the investigation poses on the dedicated Godfrey-Lee public school teachers and administrators, Democratic Floor Leader John Fitzgerald (D-Wyoming) issued the following statement in response:
“The teachers, administrators and parents of the Godfrey-Lee Public School district are fully committed to supporting the learning and well-being of their students. It is concerning the DOJ has targeted Godfrey-Lee Public Schools, Detroit Public Schools Community District and the Lansing School District for this investigation, impeding the learning of some of the most diverse student bodies in our state.
“The DOJ appears more interested in uplifting Trump politics than pursuing a good-faith review of what is happening in our schools. Instead of seeking the truth, this investigation risks becoming an ideological distraction that diverts time and resources away.
“My top priority is protecting access to a quality and inclusive education for every student. I am continuously communicating with the hard-working Godfrey-Lee educators, staff and parent community to ensure students’ learning is prioritized.”
