LANSING, Mich., Jan. 24, 2024 — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer delivered this year’s State of the State address today before a joint legislative session. In her speech, the governor discussed her agenda for the new term, which includes lowering costs for Michiganders, expanding educational opportunities and strengthening the state’s economy. State Rep. John Fitzgerald (D-Wyoming) issued the following statement on Whitmer’s address:

“The work of the legislature continues to prioritize middle and working-class Michiganders. I am excited to support and help craft legislation that lowers the cost of housing, education and caring for and raising a family. We are heading in the right direction, and the agenda outlined by Governor Whitmer will propel Michigan forward.”

Over the last year, lawmakers have laid a foundation for Michigan by putting people first. The fundamental building blocks include repealing the retirement tax, increasing the Working Families Tax Credit (EITC), funding free breakfast and lunch to public school kids, improving anti-discrimination laws and so much more.
