LANSING, Mich., May 10, 2024 — State Rep. John Fitzgerald (D-Wyoming) issued the following statement after video footage was released showing the police killing of Samuel Sterling on April 17:

“I am heartbroken and disgusted by the death of Samuel Sterling. The videos released today are gut-wrenching, and my heart is with the Sterling family as they grieve and seek justice for the death of their loved one. The greater Grand Rapids community also grieves, and we must depend on each other for strength and love.

“The officer involved was immediately put on unpaid suspension after the incident took place on April 17. Michigan State Police, under the leadership of Col. James Grady, has completed its investigation of the events of April 17. This is a tragic incident, and Col. Grady’s professionalism while overseeing this matter has assured me that the facts of this case have been preserved to ensure justice is delivered.

“Now that the investigation has been turned over to the Department of Attorney General, I expect a thorough and expedited review of the evidence to determine if and what charges will be brought against the trooper involved. Should charges be brought, I expect the trooper’s employment with the Michigan State Police will be swiftly terminated.

“Samuel’s mother has asked us to keep them in prayer, so I lift them in my prayers while we seek clarity and resolution.”
