Fitzgerald Urges Affordability Solutions Following 2026 State of the State Address
LANSING, Mich., Feb. 26, 2026 — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer delivered her final State of the State address before a joint legislative session yesterday evening, setting forth her priorities for the year ahead. With affordability concerns top of mind for many, the address was an opportunity for House Democrats to reflect on legislative successes that helped bring down costs and provide relief for Michiganders. Priority-focuses also narrowed in on the past and future legislative work on the cost of living, health care, education, jobs and safe neighborhoods.
After the address, Democratic Floorleader John Fitzgerald (D-Wyoming) issued the following statement:
“Every day, I wake up with the goal of making Michigan the best place to start and raise a family. Affordable groceries and child care, safe neighborhoods, strong public schools and good paying jobs allow parents to build a future here. When families have real economic opportunity, they set down roots and invest in their communities. Gov. Whitmer offered multiple strategies to lower costs, which is good to hear, because these challenges demand a comprehensive approach. Now it is on us to follow through. I am committed to helping Michiganders — families, workers, seniors, students — truly thrive.”
