Fitzgerald Votes for State Budget, Safeguards Medicaid, Expands Special Olympics School Programming
Democratic Floor Leader successfully negotiates budget that prioritizes Michiganders’ health, safety and education
LANSING, Mich., Oct. 7, 2025 — The Michigan Legislature passed the final FY 2025-26 General and School Aid budgets. After refusing to back down in budget negotiations to defend critical hospital, agricultural and public safety funding, House Democrats voted for a bipartisan budget that supports these priorities. The state budget provides relief to Michiganders harmed by Republican cuts in the federal so-called One Big Beautiful Bill Act, adequately funds the Michigan State Police and wages for local law enforcement and continues universal school meals, rural busing and mental health resources that kids depend on.
After the vote, Democratic Floor Leader John Fitzgerald (D-Wyoming) issued the following statement:
“This budget safeguards Medicaid, ensures continued access to free school meals for Michigan’s children and delivers record funding to support our students’ success. While more work remains to ensure federal cuts do not jeopardize our progress or vital programs, I am committed to protecting Michiganders, supporting their families and keeping Michigan on the path to prosperity.
“It was also my honor to secure $1 million to expand the Special Olympics Michigan Unified Champion Schools program to more communities across the state, giving students of all learning abilities the opportunity to play sports, build community and gain lifelong friendships and skills.”
