Democratic lawmaker secures school lunches, funding for special education and at-risk kids and protections for Medicaid and SNAP
LANSING, Mich., Oct. 6, 2025 — Last week, the Michigan Legislature passed the final FY 2025-26 General and School Aid budgets. After refusing to back down in budget negotiations to defend critical Medicaid, food assistance and education funding, House Democrats voted for a bipartisan budget that reflects Michigan’s priorities. The state budget provides relief to Michiganders harmed by Republican cuts in the federal so-called One Big Beautiful Bill Act, protects access to affordable health care and SNAP benefits and funds universal school meals, transportation and mental health resources that kids depend on.
After the vote, state Rep. Morgan Foreman (D-Pittsfield Twp.) issued the following statement:
“It took awhile, but we finally passed a budget. While the process was long and at times frustrating, we did the hard work of negotiating a budget that puts Michiganders first. We invested in the programs and services that people depend on. Protecting Medicaid and SNAP dollars, investing in our roads and supporting our schools and hospitals is essential always, and especially during this time of so much uncertainty. I’m particularly proud of our work to secure funding for at-risk students and special education. I’m also proud of the critical funding we secured for the University of Michigan, which is facing extraneous and unfair pressure from the Trump administration. It is vital that we protect public education and continue to support our world-class universities here in Michigan so that we can continue to be both a national and global leader.”
