Dear Friends,
I’m proud to share how Michigan’s commitment to ensuring every child has access to nutritious meals at school is making a real difference for families across our state.
Thanks to the expansion of free school meals throughout Michigan, students can now receive breakfast and lunch at school at no cost to their families. This initiative is about more than just food; it’s about equity, opportunity and supporting the well-being of our children.
Michigan School Meals was enacted in 2023, offering free breakfast and lunch to all public school students. Since then, more students are eating nutritious breakfasts and lunches every day across Michigan. In District 25 and our surrounding area there has been an 89% increase in breakfast served and 46% increase in lunches served.
With rising costs for groceries, gas and housing, many families have been feeling the strain. Free school meals are putting money back into parents’ pockets, saving about $1,000 per child each year while ensuring kids are still getting the nutrition they need.
Research consistently shows that students perform better in the classroom when they are well-fed. Teachers across Michigan are reporting improved focus, better attendance and fewer behavioral issues. When students don’t have to worry about hunger, they can concentrate on learning and reaching their full potential.
By making meals free for all students, we’ve eliminated the stigma that sometimes came with meal assistance programs. Now, every child can eat without feeling singled out, and more students are taking advantage of healthy school meals.
This program also strengthens local economies by supporting Michigan farmers and food suppliers who help provide fresh, nutritious ingredients to our schools.
As your state representative, I am committed to policies that support working families and invest in our children’s future. Ensuring that no child goes hungry at school is one of the most impactful ways we can build a stronger, healthier Michigan.
If you have questions or would like to share how this program has impacted your family, please don’t hesitate to reach out to my office.
In service,
Peter Herzberg
