State Rep. Kristian Grant (D-Grand Rapids) was joined by Janice Hilliard and Sonja Forte at the Michigan Capitol on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2024.

LANSING, Mich., Jan. 24, 2024 — Before a joint legislative session today, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer delivered this year’s State of the State address. In her speech, the governor discussed her agenda for the new term, which includes uplifting Michigan’s education system, growing our economy and protecting people’s hard-earned money. State Rep. Kristian Grant (D-Grand Rapids) issued the following statement on Whitmer’s address:

“The governor shared an amazing plan tonight. As she pointed out, using all the tools in our toolbox will be important as we focus on cutting the cost of living for Michigan families and growing the population as more families come. If we’re going to do that, we need to focus on legislation that makes development and construction more affordable and attractive in Michigan. This will allow us to increase the supply of housing, stabilize rents and make it easier for Michiganders who are looking to buy a home. Over the last year, we have worked to put people first; now, we continue that work with housing as a top priority.”

Over the past year, Grant and her colleagues in Lansing have worked diligently. Some of the state legislature’s accomplishments include phasing out state taxes on retirement income, increasing tax credits for working families, no-cost school meals for all public school kids and developing local economies with targeted investments. With efforts including lowering costs at the pharmacy counter, bolstering the economy and ensuring Michigan is a healthy state to live in, work will continue throughout the new year to ensure every Michigander has a bright future.
